NHL Rumour Report: Panthers clear cap space for something much bigger

The Cats are far from done after swapping out Frank Vatrano.

- Question: why would a playoff contender like the Panthers trade out a solid secondary scoring winger like Frank Vatrano? Answer: they're up to something much, much bigger than that.

- The Panthers sent out Frank Vatrano to a rival Eastern conference team in the Rangers for a 4th round pick in a move that frees up about 2.5 million in cap space. The Rangers get in Vatrano some winger depth and the Panthers set themselves up for a blockbuster in the coming days. That's the only reason you'd make a trade that - on the face of it - makes a playoff team in your conference better.

- The Panthers are in the thick of trade negotiations on multiple fronts: reports suggest they are dipping into both the elite forward and defenseman markets.

- On the blueline, Florida has been linked to Jakob Chychrun, Hampus Lindholm, Mark Giordano, Ben Chiarot and John Klingberg. Up front, they're believed to be a favourite to land Claude Giroux. Could they make multiple big moves in the coming days?

- The Panthers are believed to be dangling Owen Tippett, but several teams are believed to be pushing hard to acquire Spencer Knight and Anton Lundell. We'll see who blinks first.
