NHL Rumour Report: JT Miller frontrunners emerge

The JT Miller sweepstakes are heating up with the NHL trade deadline just around the corner.

- With their playoff odds slowly slipping away, the Canucks appear poised to be major sellers in the coming days and weeks.

- Rumours have swirled around JT Miller for months as rumblings suggest he is open to a change of scenery. Trade talks appear to have intensified in the past week or so.

- Reports suggest Canucks management expects Miller to test free agency in 2023. So, expectations are that he will be dealt, be it at this trade deadline or in the summer.

- Reports for weeks have suggested the Wild and Rangers have and continue to make aggressive pushes for Miller. But there appears to be a new frontrunner: the Maple Leafs.

- Facing the prospect of being without Jake Muzzin for the rest of the regular season, the Leafs may have an unexpectedly large chunk of LTIR cap space to make a splash.

- The Leafs made their first move over the weekend, shipping out Nick Ritchie for Ilya Lyubushkin and Ryan Dzingel. They have also been linked to many of the top defensemen on the market, including Hampus Lindholm and John Klingberg. So if the rumour mill is any indication, the Leafs are far from done their wheeling and dealing.

- The Canucks don't have to trade Miller at this deadline, but the bag of assets they could get for him will shrink in the summer. Barring a major breakthrough in extension talks or the Canucks battling back into playoff position, Miller is likely out the door in the coming weeks.
