Rumour Report: Leafs' Kapanen, Johnsson available; Nyquist, Ferland contenders + more

The Leafs, Hurricanes, Red Wings and Panthers are generating some buzz on the trade market.

  • In a bid to improve their struggling blueline, the Maple Leafs are believed to have generated some interest on forwards Andreas Johnsson and Kasperi Kapanen. Connor Brown is another name that has cropped up as well. The Hurricanes and Blues - two teams looking to add speed and skill - are rumoured to have some level of interest in Kapanen and Johnsson. Rumours have long suggested that the Hurricanes would part with one of Brett Pesce, Justin Faulk or Dougie Hamilton, while the Blues have dangled Colton Parayko and Alex Pietrangelo in the trade market. It's believed the Leafs want to upgrade the right side of their top pairing in order to shift veteran Ron Hainsey into a lesser role.

  • The number of teams linked to pending UFA winger Michael Ferland continues to grow, with the Oilers, Penguins, Canucks and Bruins being added to the list. The Maple Leafs have already been brought up in connection to the winger, who appears to have priced himself out of Carolina.

  • There hasn't been a ton of buzz around Gustav Nyquist, but he's likely to be one of the most coveted rentals available this deadline. The Predators appear to be the early favourite so far, but GM Dave Poile has his eye on a number of other targets as well.
  • Not exactly a big name, but the Panthers have let it be known that pending UFA defenseman Bogdan Kiselevich is available for trade.
