Rumour Report: Patrik Laine trade rumours intensify as stalemate drags on

The Winnipeg Jets appear to be seriously considering moving their star sniper at some point this summer.

  • What seemed unthinkable just a year ago appears to be a legitimate possibility: the Jets moving RFA winger Patrik Laine, the top tier goal scorer who was taken second overall in 2016.

  • Reports of Laine trade scenarios started popping up as last season's trade deadline approached. The scuttlebutt around the league suggested the Jets would be willing to move Laine if they had managed to acquire and extend Mark Stone. That fell through, and Laine remains a Jet.
  • There were reports around the time that also suggested a rift between Laine and the Jets on a long term contract commitment: Laine far preferring to sign short term, if at all. That puts the Jets in a tough spot, considering the other core players they need to lock up.

  • There is a growing sense that there could be a locker room issue as well, with the Jets veterans having a cold relationship with the young star.
  • Now, reports have emerged suggesting Laine would look favourably upon a change of scenery. There will be no shortage of suitors if that is the case.
  • The other factor here is RFA winger Kyle Connor who the Jets are trying to sign long term as well. Connor has been the subject of offer sheet speculation, which could force the Jets to pick between the two RFAs. Or, Laine may make it an easy choice for them and demand a trade.
  • Smoke continues to billow around Laine and the Jets, and it's not likely to subside unless the two parties extend long term. Otherwise, this could become an increasingly acrimonious relationship moving forward.
