Rumour Report: Devils 'really close' to making trade

New Jersey appears poised to bust open the trade market and get ahead of the trade deadline frenzy.

  • The Devils don't usually produce a ton of trade buzz, but with the team well on the outside of the playoff picture and not long to go until the trade deadline, the rumour mill is churning.
  • Reports suggest GM Ray Shero is preparing for a major roster overhaul. From the sounds of it, he's looking to make moves well ahead of the deadline.

  • The only Devils rumours that have surfaced in recent years have been around Travis Zajac and Damon Severson. Severson in particular would be highly coveted because he can play big minutes on the blueline and chip in offensively.
  • Pending UFAs Brian Boyle and Ben Lovejoy are likely to be available on the rental market as well. If he can get healthy, Marcus Johansson could be be had for relatively cheap. The pending UFA forward has battled injuries all season long, but he's still capable of chipping in as a secondary scorer. And although he's got another year on his deal, veteran blueliner Andy Greene could be the kind of depth defenseman a lot of teams covet this time of year.

  • There has been some buzz online suggesting pending UFA goalie Keith Kinkaid could be on the move as well. With Cory Schneider locked up for several more years, it doesn't make a ton of sense to give Kinkaid a huge raise - especially with Mackenzie Blackwood pushing his way into the NHL. The Devils are worth keeping a close eye on in the coming days - I'm guessing they see the number of sellers at this year's deadline and want to get ahead of the stampede.
